Every year, people across the UK switch on the fairy lights, wrap up presents, and gather with friends and family — filling living rooms, high streets, and school halls with the familiar sights and sounds of the festive season. But for all the mince pies eaten and Christmas jumpers worn, how much do we really know about where Christmas comes from, how its traditions began, and why we celebrate it the way we do today?

To find out, we head onto the streets and ask people of all ages and backgrounds what they think about the origins, rituals, and deeper meaning behind this time of year. From long-standing customs to modern-day habits, from religious reflections to festive fun, their answers reveal a whole range of ideas about what Christmas truly represents.
