Too Old to be a Mum?
Too Old to be a Mum?

BBC1
Jan 2010

Sue Tollesfen was nearly 58 years old when she had her first child, Freya. Now, approaching her 60th birthday, she’s exploring the possibilities of a second baby.
63 year old Lauren Cohen has three children under 5. Yet even she is seven years younger than the current title-holder of “The World’s Oldest Mother.” That’s 70 year old Rajo Devi, who has finally had a long-awaited first child after 50 years of trying.
Sue, Lauren and Rajo represent a growing number of women around the world who, with the help of IVF, are defying nature to become mothers after the menopause. Yet is their decision a wise one?
With biological boundaries being pushed ever further and the absence of any age limit on IVF, how do we decide when old is just too old to be a mum?

Director – Jane Sayers.

A CTVC production for BBC 1 transmitted on 26 January 2010
