JOHN MEETS PAUL

6x30'
ITV1
Jan 2003

A seasoned traveller, John McCarthy loves nothing more than visiting spectacular places and sailing on beautiful boats. His companion for the series, Paul the Apostle was also a well-seasoned traveller; over a period of 30 years, Paul covered some 10,000 miles by land and sea - an impressive feat even by today's standards.

This series follows John around the Mediterranean, into ports, tranquil villages and bustling cities. Many have changed beyond recognition, but occasionally John will visit somewhere that evokes the world of the first century.

John's journey takes him to the cities of Jerusalem and Rome, to Malta, the Greek cities of Athens, Corinth and Philippi, and the Turkish cities of Ephesus, Tarsus and Antioch. The scenery is spectacular, providing a stunning backdrop to our story.

Paul's story is remarkable. Following his conversion on the Road to Damascus, his life altered dramatically and he began preaching the message of Christ to anyone prepared to listen, as well as those who weren't. Beatings, imprisonment, floggings, and shipwrecks all tested his faith and endurance to their limits. It is perhaps not surprising that he also met a violent death - beheaded on a dusty street in Rome.

Yet his contribution to both the development of Christianity and world history, has been significant. Along the way, John meets people who help him piece together the story of this enigmatic and controversial figure and assess his phenomenal legacy.

The series is presented and co-written by John McCarthy, with readings by Michael Maloney.
