EVIL

1x60'
Channel 4
March 2005

Osama bin Laden labelled America as the Great Satan, and struck out at it on September 11th; George Bush and Tony Blair decided to label certain countries as an 'axis of evil', and they lashed out at them. The News of the World decided to label certain people as paedophile offenders. And they've named them and shamed them. And they've all made things, much, much worse.'
It's not good enough, says Bishop Wright, to say that if we all try a little harder we can create a perfect world. This is the world which gave us Harold Shipman, the West family and the Soham murders, one in which Evil can and does take over individuals, institutions and sometimes whole nations.
Filmed in Israel, South Africa and the UK, EVIL confronts some of the major issues of our time, from the Christmas Tsunami to the African AIDS pandemic, from the Iraq war to 911 and the murky world of violence and sexual exploitation, and puts them under the Biblical spotlight. In South Africa with Desmond Tutu, the film explores the potential for defeating evil. There is a solution to the problem of evil, says Tom Wright, if only we have the honesty and the courage to name it and understand it for what it is.
